Track Vs. Track: Beach Boys "Love You" takes on a blank 8-track tape. #vinylcommunity
This is my first "Track Vs. Track" video where I place two musical entities next to each other and they battle it out song-by-song. In this case it's the 1977 album from the Beach Boys, "Love You" taking on a blank Memorex 8-track tape (circa 1977). Which one will be the champion?

I finally found my grail I've been wanting for awhile at a (relatively) reasonable price. It's no secret to someone who has seen a few of my videos that it's the 1967 psychedelic debut album from the band Kaleidoscope, "Tangerine Dream" and this particular pressing with all of the extras. Yes, it's no mystery and I put the album title right in the title of the video, no "grail" clickbait.

I know you're only discussing albums, and Permanent Vacation definitely was the album that put the boys back on top, but I think it's worth mentioning that their re-entrance to the world of relevance and popularity began the year before Permanent Vaca was released: teaming up with Run-DMC to remake "Walk This Way" was a monster hit that introduced them to countless new fans and primed the pump (pun intended) for their triumphant return.

Yeah, the wheels started coming off in 1985. Didn't care for anything by Aerosmith after 1985 except Honkin' On Bobo, which I happen to have on vinyl. Everything else was too schmaltzy, ballads and too commercial for me. My version of "The Road Starts Hear" was crap. Noisey and tons of surface marks due to being packaged too quickly. You've gotta let the vinyl go through a cooling down process before slapping them into the inner sleeve which bleeds onto the vinyl.

Really enjoyed these two videos you did about Aerosmith. I got into the band in England from a K-Tel compilation album in1980 which all had the usual protagonists (AC/DC, Whitesnake, Judas Priest etc) and this cool track, 'Sweet Emotion'. Aerosmith also had the red greatest hits album out at the time, which I bought. loved and set about finding every album I could get. 'Done With Mirrors' is, to me, the last true Aerosmith album before Desmond Child, Diane Warren, John Kolodner and Steven Tyler's love of celebrity ruined them. 'Just Push Play' needs to be deleted from history.

'Pump' was my first awareness of Aerosmith, going backwards from that listening to other stuff was disappointing & uneven(Besides Toys) to my ADD impatient young listening self. I agree production and image crafting/exposure really crystalized their legacy. 90's was seemingly 'problematic' for the aging 70's bands finding themselves trying to still be, uh...hard? and still popular on the pop hit radio, & MTV peak exposure platform. Power-ballads & how to not be cringe-y challenge

It really is amazing, as you pointed out, that the band had such a huge and successful run in the late '80s/early '90s. They were dead in the water after "Rock In A Hard Place," that album was a colossal flop - straight to the cut-out bin. I considered (at the time) "Done With Mirrors" as their "comeback" album; that's how it was billed, so to speak, and I loved the rough, under-produced, "bad-ass" sound of it. "Permanent Vacation" was a strong, enjoyable multi-layered album with just the right amount of sheen to it, and it was great to see them regain their popularity. "Pump" seemed over-produced to me (and let's not overlook the outside songwriter help), but there were still plenty of hard rock guitar hooks there. With "Get A Grip," as you pointed out, they lost me. I wanted to like it, but it was just big-time rock star schlock to me, and not what I was into at that time. After that, it seemed every album was billed as "a return to their hard rockin' roots," but it was still schlock. However, that's what happens when you make rock 'n roll a "career." Cheers to Aerosmith for being one of the quintessential American rock 'n roll bands!

I'm personally a strong proponent for Music From Another Dimension, but I admittedly have nostalgia goggles for it. I was born in the mid 90s and found the band through their Guitar Hero game in the late 00s. So I was in high school when MFAD came out. It was the only brand new studio album of theirs I got to ride the release hype train for, so I'll forever love it for that. From seeing behind the scenes snippets on RUclips to reading articles online about it to finally hearing Legendary Child played live on American Idol! It was such a fun time for me to be an Aerosmith fan, and I'm so thankful I got to be there for it! Steven's country solo album was the next closest album release like that for me. But when it came out, I kind of just hoped it was the stopgap between MFAD and the next Aerosmith album. But as time continued to pass, I realized there likely never would be another Aerosmith album. 😪

Was Van Halen not up there with Aerosmith in being a 70s band that had hits through the 80s and into the 90 as? VH in the 90s had Right Now, Top Of The World, Poundcake, and Can't Stop Lovin' You, for example.

Are those antique malls located near or on neighborhoods with people with high incomes? Maybe they are betting that these people would be ignorant of real values of records and pay thos e prices because they either don't consider $30 for a F condition Sesame Street record to be too much or they can't be bothered with looking up the album on Discogs, or they truly think they found something valuable there, or they want to gift it to some grandson, or this is a record they used to listen to when they were children - which they can get much cheaper on Discogs. There are no Holy Grails in those places.

Nine Lives is the first Aerosmith album that came out after I became a fan, so it has a special place in my heart. I had become aware of them through the Get A Grip videos, but didn't become a huge fan until discovering Dream On and their 70s stuff sometime around 1996 or so. So I played Nine Lives over and over when it came out. Played the CD-Rom game Robert mentioned in the video a lot. Just Push Play on the other hand is one of the most disappointing albums I have ever bought. I hate that album. The title track especially can go straight to hell.

I really enjoyed the Aerosmith 1971 (The Road Starts Here) recording too. I think I paid $15 for from Amazon and got it when it came out. I noticed it was not released on Capitol Records though. I thought that was kind of strange since all of the other earlier Columbia label recordings were released by Capitol Right at the same time. I'm not sure why it was released by UMe though? But I definitely enjoyed it. My first copy had a problem at the end of both sides where it started clicking real bad. My second I exchanged it copy sounded a lot better but had a little bit of clicking at the end of one side. But it was pretty minor and I kept it. I've been listening to bootlegs for decades so music that is not considered to be great by somebody listening to just studio recordings is oftentimes really great sounding to me. I like to hear different versions of songs, live concerts, etc and I got used to some less than stellar recordings through the years I guess. But this Aerosmith recording from October of '71 sounded really good especially considering it was from Joe Perry's newly purchased tape recorder. It kind of starts off sounding like they're all in a room with some friends probably partying and practicing at the same time. I definitely enjoy cranking that one up and it still has the sound like a really great bootleg haha. Brian in Fort Worth 🎶
